“All of it parts and pieces of one
sputtering chunk of an engine
with the clear belief that God
placed you on this prairie
where the glaciers rested
before retreating north,
—From "This City at the Crossroads"
... But rivers have
memories like vinyl stored in pre-war
—From "Freddie Hubbard Comes to the Banks of the White River"
... he preaches
that a man can’t ask
God for any more
from this tilled out earth
than three guys in key
and a steady granite-
thick bit of bass work.
— From "From this Tilled out Earth"
